Pictures for Chapters 26-31

I chose these pictures because all of them were important in the last couple of chapters.  I think especially the knife which killed Bob Ewell because it ended the climax of the book. Atticus had thought initially that Jem has killed Bob Ewell in the scuffle they had after the walk home from school. But, Heck Tate knew all of the events that had happen even though he wasn’t there during the time so he told Atticus that they should just say that Bob Ewell felled on the knife. Then, the next picture with the ham is when Scout is the ham in the fall pageant at school. The final picture I picked was the one of Robert Duvall portraying Boo Radley in the movie.

Initial Post For Chapters 26 – 31

May 29th, 2009 by

What took place in chapters 21 – 36 was truly a good read. Unfortunately, it was very sad, especially in the Tom Robinson case. After all of the debating and casework, Tom Robinson was still found guilty, and put to death via the electric chair. I thought that this was very sad. In the book, Jem started crying at the injustice that the court gave Tom Robinson, just because he was black. They referenced the killing of Tom Robinson as “the senseless killing of Songbirds”, which in that time period was illegal and a sin. I agree with what they said about the case. It seems that Tom Robinson was killed with no reason behind it. He was murdered because he was different from everyone else, and they didn’t like it. There was a pageant, Boo Radley killed someone, and that was basically the end of the book. I thought that this was a very good book to read. It kept me turning the pages, and it really made me think about my views on Racism. I’m not racist; I’m just saying that My eyes opened to more of what was going on in the racial debate. It was a very good book, and I enjoyed reading it.

Initial Post Chapters 26-31

May 29th, 2009 by

In chapters 26 to 31 it was very interesting. The many different ways that the people could convict someone has been proved. The only part that got me is at the end with Boo Radley and him being kind. Jem was sleeping on the bed in Boo Radley’s house. There are a lot of things that have been happening in these chapters like what happened to Atticus and Bob Ewell. There have been different things that have been changing about Scout and everyone else in the family. Jem had changed in these chapters like everyone else after Atticus’s death. Jem had to take medications at the end of these chapters as well. They were sleeping at Boo Radley’s house because of various reasons. There has been a surprise on who Boo Radley really is. The many mysteries of Boo Radley have been solved on these chapters. The Halloween has been a good one for Jem and Scout. Boo Radley often gets out with Arthur Radley to get groceries says so the book. There has been many different things that have been working with everyone and many mysteries that have been solved through these chapters and many more for these chapters.

I choose this picture because it is like Mr. Raymond. The picture basically means that what you see is not always as it seems. When you meet Mr. Raymond, you think he’s a drunken bum and alcoholic. In reality, he isn’t actually a bum. It’s just what people perceive him to be. If the world just assumed everything about everything, and thought that their answer was the right one, then good people could be mistaken for drunks, criminals, and overall good people. As the picture states, never judge a book by its cover. Almost done with the book, yet still more to come.

Initial Post for Chapters 17-20

May 26th, 2009 by

I noticed that quite a bit happened in these chapters. All of Tom Robinson case is taking place in the first chapters. Atticus has an awful lot of pressure on him to defend Tom Robinson well during the trial. Mainly put on by his self because he said, “If I don’t defend this man I will lose hope in myself.” One of the things I loved was the strategies he used. Like the test to see if Tom Robinson could write with his left hand. Tom Robinson couldn’t at all because all the muscles in his left arm were torn in a cotton gin accident. And all of Mayella injuries were on her right side meaning that if they stood right in front of each other he couldn’t have done any damage at all like she said. But, despite all of that the all white jury still convicted the obviously innocent man of the accused crime. You could see after the trial Jem faith in the justice system was shaken to its core. Right after a strange event happened and Atticus said, “He would leave early and wouldn’t come home until late night. Despite what he told them Scout and Jem left and followed their father to the jailhouse. They saw that he was waiting on the expected mob soon to come to kill the innocent Tom Robinson. As soon as the mob started to move closer Scout spotted one of her classmates’ fathers. Scout reminded him of a child and started to make him remember the debt to her father Atticus. Then, the mob subsided and went home.

Initial Post For Chapters 21 – 25

May 26th, 2009 by

Lots of things happened during the course of these chapters. The Tom Robinson case is finally drawing to a close, after spanning through several chapters. The kids meet a guy who claims to be a drunk, outside. He was carrying a plastic bag, and let Dill take a sip of what he thought was alcohol. As it turns out, it was just coca-cola. It turns out that he was only pretending to be a drunk. He did this because he thought that the white people were wrong, and that he generally preferred black people. He was posing as a drunk because he was scared that the white people would be angry with him if they knew he was telling the truth about his feelings. So he made it look like he could tell his feelings, but people wouldn’t think it was true because he was a drunk. I thought that this was very clever of him for thinking of this strategy. It makes sense that nobody would actually believe a drunken bum on the side of the road. The kids decided to stay with him and learn more about him. Honestly, I wouldn’t want to stick around with a guy who looks like a hobo to learn more about him. The book is almost over, and I’m interested to see how it ends.

Initial Post Chapters 21-25

In these chapters it got interesting as well. Almost the end of the court, Atticus told Jem, Dill, and Scout to go back home to eat and they could go back to watch it, but he said to eat slowly. The most things that happened is that Atticus lost the case of Tom Robinson and they didn’t want to bother there father in anyway possible for anything. They met this guy who was pretending to be drunk, but he was really drinking coca-cola out of a bottle in a bag. The guy didn’t want to get a lot of attention to himself. He found Scout and Dill to talk to about this and he never told anyone else about it because he wanted them to just think of what they want to. They wanted to get away, but Scout and Dill didn’t want to because they wanted to know more about him and they found him interesting. I was interested in that guy as well because I hadn’t met anyone like him before and he was interesting to me as well that he would pretend to be drunk and to drink, but he was really drinking coca-cola through a bottle in a bag.

Quote Analysis for Chapters 17-20

May 20th, 2009 by

I’m no idealist to believe firmly in the integrity of our courts and in the jury system – that is no ideal to me, it is a living, working reality. Gentlemen, a court is no better than each man of you sitting before me on this jury. A court is only as sound as its jury, and a jury is only as sound as the men who make it up.

-Atticus Finch

That was one of the quotes during his speech to the jury during the first court date. I loved this quote because he talking about how it doesn’t matter how evidence you have that you will lose your case if you don’t have a fair and honorable jury in the court. That he knows that the legal system is fair but they purposely set up an all white jury for the Tom Robinson case to convict him of this obvivously wrong and unjust accusation made by Mayella.
